তিনটি পর্বে বিন্যস্ত (প্রাক-ধ্রুপদী, ধ্রুপদী, ধ্রুপদী,-পরবর্তী) আখ্যানতত্ত্বের এই আখ্যান নিছক কোনও কালানুক্রমিক ধারাবিবরণী নয়। আখ্যান নির্মাণের এই প্রক্রিয়ায় দেখা দিয়েছে এক জটিল ও সমস্যায়িত তত্ত্ব বিশ্লেষণের ও অনুসন্ধানের প্রয়াস। সেই অর্থে যার কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ক্লোজার নেই। এই আখ্যানের দুটি সম্ভাব্য অভিমুখ – একটি ফিরে এসেছে আখ্যানতত্ত্বের উৎসে, অপরটি এগিয়ে গেছে তার অনিশ্চিত ভবিষ্যতের দিকে। এই অনুসন্ধানের শরীর বেয়ে উঠে এসেছে যে তত্ত্ববিশ্ব সেখানে ধারাবাহিকতা থাকলেও কার্যকারণের সম্পর্কটি অনির্দিষ্ট। এখানে হাজির থেকেছে বিবিধ বৌদ্ধিক ঐতিহ্য, তাত্ত্বিক আন্দোলন ও বিশ্লেষণী প্যারাডাইম। এরই সঙ্গে জড়ো করা হয়েছে বিভিন্ন সময়, দেশ ও ঘরানার  আখ্যানতাত্ত্বিক আলোচনা। ফলে অনুসন্ধানের কাজটি ছড়িয়ে গেছে  আখ্যানতত্ত্বের বহুবিধ শাখাপ্রশাখায় – অবয়ববাদ থেকে ইতিহাসচর্চার দিকে, ভাষাতত্ত্ব থেকে সমাজবিজ্ঞান ও মনস্তত্ত্বের দিকে। গ্রন্থটির শেষে জুড়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে  আখ্যানতত্ত্বের একটি নাতিদীর্ঘ পারিভাষিক অভিধান।

This narrative of narrative theory divided into three parts (pre-classical, classical and post-classical) is not merely a chronological account. There is an effort to investigate and analyze a complex and problematic theory in the process of the construction of a narrative. There is, in that sense, no such definite closure. This narrative has two probable directions – one which goes back to its linguistic roots, the other moving forward to an uncertain future. The theoretical world which has emerged out of this search accommodates a continuity though a definite causal relation is absent here. Here there is an assembly of various intellectual traditions, theoretical movements and analytical paradigms. Along with it there is a detailed discussion on the narrative theories of different countries, periods and schools. As a result, the search has spread to numerous branches of narrative theory – from formalism to the study of history, from linguistics to social science and psychology. At the end of the book a brief list of relevant terms has been appended.
